Our Mission

The Pilbara Division of General Practice aims to assist General Practitioners in improving the Health of Pilbara Communities.

We officially commenced operations on 5 October 1998 and are based at our offices in Sharpe Avenue, Karratha with additional project offices in Onslow and Tom Price.

The Division's core business areas are:

  • Supporting General Practitioners and the General Practice workforce;
  • Provision of quality education for general practitioners in the region; and
  • Development and implementation of innovative health programs in communities.

We strive to achieve these goals by working collaboratively with key stakeholders including:

  • The Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing;
  • The Pharmacy Guild of Australia;
  • The National Prescribing Service;
  • The Department of Health Western Australia;
  • The Australian General Practice Network;
  • Community leaders;
  • Local Shires (eg: Shire of Roebourne);
  • The Rural Clinical School (RCS);
  • Western Australian Centre for Remote and Rural Medicine (WACRRM);
  • Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP);
  • Australian Medical Association (AMA);
  • Other Western Australian Divisions;
  • Corporate sponsors (eg: Pilbara Iron); and
  • Other local and non-local medical, health and social service providers.

 Strategic Plan

A new strategic plan was developed by our Board of Directors in May 2008. The result is documented in '...Towards 2010' available by contacted the Pilbara Health Network on T: 9185 6662 or E: info [at] pdgp [dot] com [dot] au

Funding

Funding for PDGP programs is obtained predominantly through government (ie: the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing). Other funding is received according to specific programs. This includes (but is not limited to):

  • RCS and WACRRM help us support and provide education to medical practitioners, participate in pilot projects and build community partnerships; and
  • Pilbara Iron (Rio Tinto) and the Pilbara Development Commission are proud partners in our Leaping Lizards! program.

Quality

Australian Divisions of General Practice have each undertaken accreditation for certification by a suitable quality program.

The Pilbara Health Network was reviewed by the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards (ACHS) using the Quality for Divisions Network Guide on 13 September 2007. We are pleased to have been awarded a three year accreditation status (effective 7 February 2008).
